Koksnes krājas salīdzināšana kokiem Turaidas muzejrezervāta meža parkā (10.–12. kl.). Jaunieši mēra koka apkārtmēru.

Target group: students in grades 10–12

During the activity, students learn how to conduct field research in a natural environment. Working in groups in the Turaida Museum Reserve forest park, they measure the height of ten trees of different species using a Bormann measuring stick and a hypsometer. The collected data are recorded on worksheets, and participants carry out photographic documentation by photographing tree leaves in order to compare biologically valuable trees.

Comparing Timber Volume (Grades 10–12)

Target group: students in grades 10–12

An additional highlight of the activity is learning about one of the rarest and most protected beetle species living in the Museum Reserve forest park — the hermit beetle (Osmoderma eremita).

To calculate timber volume, students use a prepared data file with built-in formulas into which they enter their measurements. At the end of the activity, participants reflect on the research results and draw conclusions.

Linked to the Grade 10 Biology course (Biology I – basic course), topic: “The Environment and Evolutionary Changes in Organisms.”

During the programme students:

  • improve their skills in conducting field research,
  • analyse and process data collected during fieldwork using IT tools,
  • identify observed organisms using identification guides,
  • develop habits of recording and analysing research data,
  • learn to act responsibly and treat the natural environment with care.
